 PCM High Resolution:

High Resolution recording is any recording that exceeds the standard red Book CD specifications of 16 bits and a sample rate of 44100 samples per second.  Newer PCM resolutions are based on multiple of the old sample rate standards. As you increase your sampling rate, you increase the up limit of frequencies you can record.  As you increase your bit depth, you increase accuracy of the recorded amplitude.

In simple terms the ability to record with a higher sample rate and bit depth allow for a more accurate linier recording.  You are increasing the amount of information captured, thus a more detailed recording is made.   With a 44.1 KHz recording, the highest frequency recorded is 22050 Hz.  While this is 22050Hz above the accepted range of human hearing, a large heavy filter is required to technically achieve this response.  This filter referred to as the Nyquist is the 300 pound gorilla of PCM audio.  Often this filter interferes with the frequencies below it that are quite audible. With a higher sample rate the Nyquist can be moved well above the audible spectrum, reducing the effect.  This, in combination with a faster response time and the ability to capture greater detail, is why we recommend that all recording by The Pan Galactic Company be done in high resolution.
